Nachimuthu Socrates is a US citizen living in the US for over 30 years. Born in India he came to the US to do his post graduation in Nuclear Engineering from Colombia University, New York. He is the founder of several Tamil organizations in the US. Socrates has also been a patron of Indian culture bringing in folk musicians, dancers, classical singers and film performers from India to organize cultural events.
Among friends Socrates is known as a kind hearted, warm person with great humility. Usually he is one of the first to volunteer for any community events - whether building a temple or arranging a concert or fund collection drives for Tsunami victims.
Although educated as an engineer Socrates is a Tamil enthusiast with extensive interest in Tamil literary and classical works. He contributed in publishing and releasing an English translation of Thirukkural (a Tamil classical work published over 2000 years ago) for children of expatriate Tamils which was released by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
Socrates has also taken up the cause of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka who have suffered under the tyrannical rule of successive Sri Lankan governments (Several tens of thousands of Tamils have died since 1956 due to targeted killing, lynching, indiscriminate bombing, starvation and lack of even basic medical facilities in North and East Sri Lanka and Colombo).
Socrates has highlighted the sufferings of the Tamils in Sri Lanka over the last several years to the state department. He has petitioned the state department requesting the US government to stop supporting a government that has been terrorizing and killing its own citizens.
